Tips

history
汲黯 and 郑当时 were upright ministers of Emperor Wu of Han, and both rose high and lost office. Ji An was known for criticizing the emperor to his face. He once complained that the emperor used his officials like stacked firewood, 后来者居上 'the last to arrive end up on top', the source of 后来居上.
culture
Sima Qian closes the chapter with the judge Zhai Gong, whose gate was crowded with visitors while he held office and so deserted after his dismissal that a net for sparrows could be set there, hence 门可罗雀. When he was restored and the guests came back, he wrote on his gate that only life and death, poverty and wealth show what a friendship is worth.
