Tips
history
From Wang Shifu's Yuan drama 《西厢记》 (Act 5, scene 4): the matchmaker asks how she can "欢天喜地" hand the promised bride to another man. The image stacks 欢 (joy) with 天 (sky) and 喜 (delight) with 地 (earth) — joy filling heaven and earth.
usage
Typically used adverbially with 地 to describe how someone does something joyfully. Warmer and more vivid than the plain 高兴. Compare 兴高采烈 (elated and excited), 喜气洋洋 (brimming with joy).
