Son of 梁启超 and founder of the modern study of Chinese architecture. With his wife 林徽因 he surveyed old buildings such as the Tang temple 佛光寺, and he fought to save the old city walls of Beijing.

He called the Tang hall at 佛光寺 the 中国第一国宝, 'China's number one national treasure'. His team dated it to 857 by matching the donor named on a beam, a woman called 宁公遇, with the same name on a dated stone pillar outside.

His book 中国建筑史 (A History of Chinese Architecture) is still the standard reference, and the Liang-Lin household was a central salon of 1930s intellectual Beijing.
