Student of reformer Kang Youwei (康有为). After the failure of the 1898 Hundred Days' Reform, he fled to Japan and used the newspaper 《》 to introduce Western political ideas and popularize terms still used today (e.g. 经济, 社会, 民主). His son Liang Sicheng (梁思成) became China's foremost architectural historian.
