梁思成 was the son of reformer 梁启超. He and his wife 林徽因 (the celebrated poet-architect) rediscovered the Tang-dynasty 佛光寺 in Shanxi in 1937. He fought unsuccessfully to save the Ming walls of old Beijing from demolition in the 1950s — a loss he mourned for the rest of his life.

His book 《中国建筑史》 (A History of Chinese Architecture) is still the standard reference, and the Liang-Lin household was a central salon of 1930s intellectual Beijing.
