About Li Ao

1935–2018 · 作家 writer

Writer and social critic in Taiwan, jailed twice under Kuomintang rule for his writing and later a legislator. Mainland viewers knew him from his Phoenix TV show 李敖有话说.

In 2000 he ran in Taiwan's leadership election as the 新党 (New Party) candidate and took 0.13% of the vote.

He liked to boast that, in fifty years and in five hundred, the three best writers of modern vernacular Chinese, 白话文, were 李敖, 李敖 and 李敖. He used the line to sell his books.
