Tips

history
Northern painter whose 寒林平远 (wintry forests, level distance) style of spidery bare trees on misty plains defined Song landscape painting. By the Yuan dynasty, genuine Li Cheng works were so rare that the critic 米芾 complained 'no Li Cheng' (无李论) - almost everything attributed to him was actually a later imitation.
culture
Together with Dong Yuan (董源) and Fan Kuan (范宽), he forms the canonical trio of Song founding masters. Most famous attribution is 《读碑窠石图》, now in Osaka Museum.
