One of the
宋四家 (Four Masters of Song calligraphy) alongside
苏轼,
黄庭坚, and
蔡襄. Famous for his 'Mi-dot' (
米点) landscape technique — using dots of ink to suggest misty mountains. Also renowned as an eccentric: he reportedly once bowed to a particularly strange-shaped rock, calling it 'elder brother' (
米颠拜石).
