Short for 月下老人. Deity of marriage in Chinese folk religion who ties a red thread (红线) around the ankles of destined partners. First attested in the Tang tale 《续幽怪录》 by Li Fuyan. Worshipped at matchmaker temples across China and Taiwan — Taipei's 霞海城隍庙 and Hangzhou's 月老祠 draw large numbers of young single visitors.
