智英

Best known internationally as the title character of the 2016 Korean novel 《82년생 김지영》 (Chinese: 《82年生的金智英》, English: Kim Ji-young, Born 1982) by Cho Nam-joo, adapted into a 2019 film. The novel became a cultural phenomenon in South Korea and a touchstone in feminist debates across East Asia. 智英 was one of the most popular female names in 1980s Korea, deliberately chosen by the author to represent an everywoman.

Unlike Western names (which Chinese transliterates phonetically), Korean names that originally have hanja are written with their Chinese-character form and read with Mandarin pronunciations: 智 'wisdom' + 英 'hero / brilliant' = 'wise and brilliant', a flattering combo typical of Korean given-name conventions.
