普陀山 is the home of 观音, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The other three Sacred Buddhist Mountains are 五台山 in Shanxi, 峨眉山 in Sichuan and 九华山 in Anhui, each the seat of a different bodhisattva. Pilgrims reach the island by ferry.
history
普陀 is a sound rendering of Sanskrit Potalaka, the mountain where Guanyin lives in Buddhist scripture. The Potala Palace in Lhasa, 布达拉宫, is named after the same mountain.
