The modern form-fitting qipao was actually reinvented in 1920s Shanghai, blending Manchu robes with Western tailoring. The original Qing Dynasty version was much looser. Today's qipao is a symbol of Chinese elegance, often worn at weddings, formal events, and by restaurant hostesses.
