Eastern Han poet and musician, daughter of the scholar 蔡邕. Carried off by the Xiongnu, she lived among them for twelve years until 曹操 ransomed her; the poem 胡笳十八拍 is attributed to her.

Back home she wrote out from memory some 400 of her father's lost texts for 曹操. Parting from the two sons she left among the Xiongnu is the heart of the Peking opera 《文姬归汉》, 'Wenji returns to Han', first staged by 程砚秋.

Her courtesy name was originally 昭姬. Jin-dynasty writers changed it to 文姬 to avoid writing 昭, part of the name of 司马昭, father of the Jin dynasty's founder.
