捐资 is more formal than 捐钱 and is typical in news and official writing. It strongly collocates with 助学 (aid education), 兴学 (build schools), and 救灾 (disaster relief) — e.g. 捐资助学 'donate funds for education'.
mistakes
捐资 takes either an amount (捐资一百万) or a purpose clause (捐资助学), but not a person as direct object. Use 捐给 + person/org for that: 他捐给学校一百万.
