Phrase appears in Wen Kang's Qing-dynasty novel 《儿女英雄传》(Tales of Heroic Sons and Daughters): the speaker boasts of his '得意门生' — the pupil he most personally instructed. 得意 = pleased, 门生 = disciple of one's school.
usage
Used in academic, martial-arts, and apprenticeship contexts — anywhere a teacher singles out one student as the pride of their lineage. Slightly old-fashioned, but still widely used in journalism.
