Tips

history
His name was 赵胜, and he took his title from his fief at 平原. When Qin besieged the Zhao capital 邯郸, his little-known retainer 毛遂 put himself forward to go with him to Chu and won the alliance with a sword in his hand, giving the idioms 毛遂自荐 and 脱颖而出.
culture
司马迁 called him a graceful young lord of a muddy age, but blamed his greed for the land of 上党 for drawing Zhao into its disaster at 长平, quoting the saying 利令智昏, 'profit dims the wits'.
