The standalone 物价局 was merged into the market regulation administrations (市场监督管理局) during the 2018 institutional reform, so the standalone name is increasingly historical — many government documents and older signage still use it.

The 市 prefix means 市级 (city-level); the same agency existed at 省 (provincial) and 县 (county) levels. 市物价局 literally parses as "the price bureau of the city."
