In daily speech people just say 寸. The 市 marks the 1929 "market system" that tied the old units to metric: 1 市尺 is a third of a meter, so 1 市寸 is about 3.33 cm. Don't confuse it with the 英寸 (inch, 2.54 cm) used for screen sizes.
