巷 (xiàng) means 'alley / lane' and 战 (zhàn) is 'battle' — fighting waged street by street, alley by alley. Note that 巷 has a second reading hàng (used only in 巷道 hàngdào, 'mine tunnel'); the military term is always xiàng.
