禅 is read shàn here, "to sacrifice to Earth", as in
禅让 (to abdicate in favor of another), not chán as in Zen.
封 was the offering to Heaven on the summit of Mount Tai,
禅 the offering to Earth on a low hill at its foot. Few emperors dared it, and the last was
宋真宗 in 1008.
