Term crystallized in the late 2000s for the children of entrepreneurs who got rich under Deng Xiaoping's 1980s reforms. Often carries negative connotations of entitlement. The parallel-opposite 穷二代 (second-gen poor) was coined around the same time.

usage

The 二代 suffix spawned a whole family: 官二代 (officials' kids), 星二代 (celebrity kids), 富三代 (third-generation rich), 网二代 (internet-famous kids).
