Tips

history
Cited in Feng Yuxiang's memoir 《我所认识的蒋介石》 (The Chiang Kai-shek I Knew, ch. 71): 我们最好是宽大为怀,不为已甚 - 'we should be magnanimous and not press too far'. 怀 here means 'one's heart/breast'.
usage
Often a polite plea, asking someone in a position of power (a boss, judge, parent) to show leniency. Common in formal apologies and courtroom speeches.
