Xiaogan literally means 'filial piety moves [Heaven]'. Local legend says Dong Yong (董永) was so devoted to his father that the Jade Emperor sent a heavenly weaver to be his wife - the city was named to commemorate the story. It's one of the few Chinese cities named for a Confucian virtue.

Xiaogan was the early epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020, the second hardest-hit city after Wuhan in the same Hubei Province (湖北省).
