He finished the play in 1699 after more than ten years and three drafts. In his own words it aims 借离合之情，写兴亡之感: to use the partings and reunions of lovers to convey the rise and fall of a dynasty. With 洪昇's 《长生殿》 it is one of the two great plays of the early Qing.
