In 孔尚任's play (1699) she loves the young scholar 侯方域, who gives her a fan. Pressed to become an official's concubine, she throws herself to the floor and her blood stains the fan, and a painter friend turns the stains into peach blossoms. Her loyalty is set against the fall of the Ming.

history

She was one of the 秦淮八艳, the courtesans of the Qinhuai River in Nanjing who were famed for poetry, music and loyalty to the Ming. A house by the river is shown today as her former home.
