In old texts this character means to feel ashamed, the same as the modern character 愧.

history
媿 is an old variant and is not used independently in modern Chinese. Its standard descendant is 愧 'ashamed' (as in 惭愧 'ashamed', 问心无愧 'with a clear conscience'). The old form used the woman radical where the modern form uses the heart radical.
register
Archaic only — classical text and etymology notes; modern Chinese always uses 愧.
