In 617,
平阳公主, daughter of the future founder of the Tang dynasty, raised an army of some 70,000 to back her father's rising against the Sui. Her camp was called
娘子军 because a woman commanded it. Today the word is used, often playfully, for any team made up of women, such as a women's sports team.
