Tips

history
Around 1299 he made his small principality in north-west Anatolia independent of the Seljuk sultanate, and his son Orhan went on to take Bursa. The dynasty and the empire were named after him, which is why 奥斯曼 can mean the man, the dynasty or the empire. English "Ottoman" comes from the Arabic form of his name, Uthman.
usage
In the name, 一 keeps its first tone (Yīshì, 'the First'), because a regnal number is an ordinal and ordinals do not change tone. The same goes for 苏莱曼一世 (Suleiman I).
