history
Its author is unknown. It took shape in the Ming dynasty under the title 昔时贤文 'Words of the Wise of Old', and later editors kept adding sayings, hence 增广 'expanded'. Children read it alongside 三字经 and 百家姓.
culture
Lines from it are still quoted every day, such as 一寸光阴一寸金 'an inch of time is worth an inch of gold' and 莫道君行早 'don't say you set out early', which goes on: someone else set out earlier still.
