Zengcheng is famous for 挂绿荔枝, a legendary cultivar whose single mother-tree fruit has sold at auction for millions of yuan. The region has been a top lychee producer since the Ming dynasty.

Since 2014 Zengcheng has technically been 增城区 (a district of Guangzhou) rather than a standalone 市, but locals and older text still commonly say 增城市.
