Tips

history
Serialized in 1844–1846. The young sailor Edmond Dantès is framed on the eve of his wedding and locked in the island fortress of If. A fellow prisoner, the Abbé Faria, educates him and reveals a treasure hidden on the island of Monte Cristo; Dantès escapes, finds it, and comes back as the Count to reward his friends and destroy his enemies.
culture
基督山 translates the island's name, Monte Cristo 'Mount of Christ', word for word. The novel became a bestseller in China when 蒋学模's translation was reissued in 1978, and its closing words, 'wait and hope', 等待 and 希望, are often quoted.
