嘢 is a Cantonese dialect word equivalent to Mandarin 东西 (dōngxi, thing/stuff). You'll encounter it in Hong Kong and Guangdong. 乜嘢 (miēyě) = what? 好嘢 (hǎoyě) = good stuff.
Left mouth radical marks 嘢 as something spoken - the character was coined in Cantonese to write the colloquial morpheme yě 'thing, stuff,' and the mouth flag tells you it lives in speech, not in literary writing. Same family logic as 啊, 呢, 喂.
Right side 野 carries the sound yě exactly - a textbook clean borrowing with no tone shift. 野 contributes no meaning here; it was picked purely because its reading matched the Cantonese colloquial word for 'thing.'
