More technical / formal than (xī) alone. by itself can mean inhale, suck, or absorb in any context; 吸入 specifically marks 'into the lungs / into a container' and is preferred in medical, safety, and scientific writing (e.g. 吸入 inhaler, 吸入麻醉 inhalation anesthesia).
