Head of the Xi'an Film Studio in the 1980s, where he backed early films by 张艺谋 and 陈凯歌. He directed 《老井》 and 《变脸》; his last film, 《百鸟朝凤》, came out after his death.

张艺谋 starred in his 《老井》 and was named best actor at the Tokyo International Film Festival, where the film won the top prize. In the early 1990s Wu lived in the United States, where he ran a video rental shop, before returning to China in 1994.
