As head of Xi'an Film Studio (西安电影制片厂) in the 1980s he greenlit early works by Zhang Yimou (张艺谋) and Chen Kaige (陈凯歌), effectively launching the Fifth Generation. He died in 2014 just before his last film 《百鸟朝凤》 (Song of the Phoenix) was released.
