  1. 1 (mahjong) to "chow"; to claim a discarded tile to complete a run
  2. 2 to pick up the tile discarded by the player to your left

Examples

他刚打出三万，我就吃牌了。
Tā gāng dǎchū sān wàn, wǒ jiù chīpái le.
He discarded the 3-of-characters and I immediately chowed it.
只能吃上家打出的牌。
Zhǐ néng chī shàngjiā dǎchū de pái.
You can only chow from the player on your left.

Mahjong calls: 吃 claims a tile to make a run (only from upstream player), 碰 claims a tile to make a triplet, 杠 upgrades to a four-of-a-kind, 胡 declares a winning hand.
