history

Chain of about 56 volcanic islands stretching ~1,300 km from the tip of Hokkaido to Kamchatka. The four southernmost islands (Japanese: 北方領土, hoppō ryōdo, 'Northern Territories') were occupied by the Soviet Union in 1945 and remain a major obstacle to a Russia-Japan peace treaty.
