China's PLA used a six-tier
士官 (NCO) system, and
六级士官 sat at the top - a senior career soldier roughly equivalent to a Western sergeant major. The PLA reformed the system in 2022 to align ranks more closely with international standards, so the term now appears mostly in pre-reform contexts.
