The name comes from a family of Shaoxing-opera monkey actors. His father, 章宗义, performed as 六龄童 "Six-Year-Old Boy"; an elder brother, 小六龄童, died young of leukaemia, and the younger brother, 章金莱, took the stage name 六小龄童.
