Tips

history
Born 朱耷, a descendant of the Ming royal house, he became a Buddhist monk after the Manchu conquest and at times feigned madness. In his late signatures the four characters 八大山人 are run together so that they look like both 哭之 'weeping for it' and 笑之 'laughing at it', read as grief for the fallen Ming.
mistakes
八大 is not 'eight great' here. One early biography says he took the name from a Buddhist sutra on the eight realizations of great beings that he loved to recite. 山人 'mountain man' was a common self-name for recluses.
