November 11 (11/11, four 'bare sticks') started as a 1990s Nanjing University student joke about being single. Alibaba's Tmall turned it into 双十一 in 2009 — now an annual shopping festival that dwarfs Black Friday in sales volume.

Also called 双十一 (shuāng shíyī, 'Double Eleven'), which is the dominant name in retail contexts. 光棍节 keeps the original 'single people's day' flavor; 双十一 is purely the shopping event.
