Two famous referents: (1) the actual mountain in Hainan, named for its five peaks resembling fingers; (2) in 《
西游记》 (Xīyóujì, Journey to the West), the Buddha turns his hand into a vast mountain and traps the Monkey King beneath it for 500 years until Tang Sanzang frees him. The line 'as long as you can't escape from the Buddha's palm' (
跳不出如来佛的手心) is the proverb that grew out of this scene.
