Tips

usage
三藏 "the Three Baskets" (the sutras, the monastic rules and the treatises) is the Buddhist canon, and a monk who had mastered all three was called 三藏法师. 藏 is read zàng here, as in 西藏, not cáng "to hide".
culture
In everyday speech he is 唐僧, and 唐僧肉 "the Tang monk's flesh", which the novel's demons believe gives eternal life, now means any prize that everyone is after.
