Tips

history
On 4 May 1919 students in Beijing protested against the Treaty of Versailles, which handed Germany's rights in Shandong to Japan. The protests grew into the 五四运动, a movement for science and democracy, nicknamed 赛先生 'Mr Science' and 德先生 'Mr Democracy', and for writing in 白话 instead of classical Chinese.
usage
Alone, 五四 works as a modifier: 五四精神 'the May Fourth spirit', 五四时期 'the May Fourth era'. The holiday is 五四青年节, when young people aged 14 and over get half a day off.
