Today's Beijing is built on the old site of Zhongdu.
Tips
history
金朝 (Jin Dynasty) moved its capital here from Huining in 1153 and renamed it Zhongdu ('Middle Capital'). When the Mongols took it in 1215 they leveled most of it; Kublai Khan later built 大都 (Dadu) northeast of the ruins, which became Beijing.
memory
中 (middle) + 都 (capital) = 'Middle Capital', one of several historical '都' names for Beijing alongside 大都, 北京, 京师.
