Tips

culture
Usually 儒 (Confucianism), 释 (Buddhism, after 释迦牟尼) and 道 (Daoism), also written 儒释道. In late imperial times the belief that the three are one let many temples house Confucius, the Buddha and Laozi side by side.
history
In the Han text 白虎通, 三教 means something older: the teachings of the three early dynasties, loyalty (忠) under the Xia, reverence (敬) under the Shang and refinement (文) under the Zhou.
