三合会 originated as anti-Manchu secret societies in Qing-dynasty China (17th–18th century).
三合 refers to the 'three harmonies' (heaven, earth, man). They evolved into criminal organizations based mainly in Hong Kong, Macau, and the Chinese diaspora, involved in extortion, drug trafficking, and gambling.
