Tips

culture
Four lines, seven characters each, 28 characters total. Du Mu's 《清明》 — 清明时节纷纷,路上行人 ('On Qingming the rain falls and falls, travellers on the road are heartbroken') — is the canonical example most Chinese students can recite.
grammar
Strict tonal rules: alternating (level) and (oblique) tones must follow one of four standard patterns. Lines 2 and 4 must rhyme; line 1 may rhyme. Lines 3 and 4 ideally form a parallel couplet but it isn't strictly required as in 律诗.
