The whole poem is four lines: 鹅,鹅,鹅,曲项向天歌。白毛浮绿水,红掌拨清波。 'Goose, goose, goose, it bends its neck and sings to the sky. White feathers float on green water; red feet paddle the clear ripples.'

When 武则天 read his call to arms and reached 一抔之土未干,六尺之孤何托, 'the tomb's earth is not yet dry, and where is the orphan heir to turn?', she asked who wrote it and blamed her chief minister for leaving such a talent unused.
