Originally Buddhist — the four Lokapala guardians of the cardinal directions. Since 1992 the term most commonly refers to Hong Kong's '四大天王': 张学友, 刘德华, 黎明, 郭富城. The label was coined by a Hong Kong paper and defined Cantopop for a decade.
